Produktive Unordnung kommt im Dezmeber 2017!

Produktive Unordnung - Metamorphosen der Wunderkammer bei Aby M. Warburg und im Internet
erscheint im Dezember 2017 im zu Klampen Verlag. Softcover, 230 Seiten.

Exhibition STRANGER THINGS

Exhibition Opening: STRANGER THINGS
18.01.2017 / 18.00 Uhr / Die Schöne / Kuffnergasse 7 / 1160 Vienna
Yes, there will be drinks and music!

For her first solo exhibition in Vienna and two years of only writing Felixmüller will show next to new works also parts out of the body of works GLORY DAYS (2014), HOW ARE THINGS (2010) and LOST THINGS (2011). The artist and media theorist studied photography in Leipzig at the Academy of Visual Arts and just finished her PhD in Philosophy on productive mess and chamber of curiosities.

The imagery of Felixmüllers work expresses the coincidental encounters and obliquities of everyday objects. The artist collects motifs like children collect sticks or stones. Different is the hanging, always looking for new ways to show the work, there are always different displays and arrangements of them in each exhibition.
It is the full intention for the process of sorting, exchanging, rejecting, adding and collecting a large pool of seemingly accidental moments to compose a narrative that often holds multiple layers of meaning for the viewer, and thus to cause to resort to past memories and experiences as a result of the images’ juxtaposition. The incentive and aim of this work lies in discovering something amongst the images and their juxtaposition, which is not as such present in the room. References to current tendecies of pop culture are not always intended but always welcome.

Produktive Unordnung - Metamorphosen der Wunderkammer bei Aby M. Warburg und im Internet

Dissertation

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!

It was a wonderfull exciting year for me. The year of my first book! GLORY DAYS.

Soon afterwards I dived down into the lonley darkness of writing my dissertation on Productive Mess. And I am still doing that. I came up to get some air after the second chapter on Aby Warburg was finished and to go to London in March for a couple of month to put all my thoughts on him and his incredible library into context with the Warburg Institute at Woburne Square. I am very excited!

So far. I hope you had also a wonderful 2014 and I wish everybody all the best for 2015!

H Book Show at Doomed Gallery London was a blast!

I just wanted to share some quick impressions on the photobook show in London last weekend.

Photobookshow is a Brighton-based arts organisation, set up in 2011 by William Sadowski and Kevin Beck to raise the profile of artist-led photobooks. It aims to hold several exhibitions a year, alongside talks and workshops. They alphabeticise the shows and this time it was H at Doomed Gallery in London. I was fairly surprised about the crowd that came by for the opening, but even more to see a lot of people popping by on Saturday. So thank you William and Kevin for the wonderfull exhibition and also to my hosts Alison Ballard!!!

About the book
The pictures express the coincidental encounters of everyday objects. They are more than they appear when they don’t function as they are supposed to. My observation exposes the objects' vulnerability and they seem comical and crazy. And because I get asked often: Nothing is staged, the objects just find me.
Two years ago I startet concepting with graphic designer Paul Bowler in early 2011. Editing followed just one rule: Every page should be a new confronting, confusing view. Out of every juxtaposition results an unexpected association, and we avoided repetition of motifs or even colour schemes. So it was clear to us that it should be a pure and simple book, much like a children's picture book. The only suspension are some black pages, where the index is hidden. We decided to show the pictures all over the pages, right from the first to the last. We wanted it to look like a magazine, so paper and cover have a high gloss shimmer. For the double page it is important to open the book easily, so it comes with American binding.

GLORY DAYS is out there!

The 2. Vienna Photobook Festival has been over for ten days now - so now is the time to give you some news of all the things that have happened since then. Joscha Steffens came over from Cologne and we shared a table for our books GLORY DAYS and Ghost/Warrior, a perfect sharing partner 'cause they are two totally different kinds of book. The first day went by as fast as a racing car, and it felt like hundreds of people came by to take a look, sometimes they liked it, sometimes not. Some bought a copy, others just looking for a talk. It was a really nice thought of Michael Kollmann (photobook curator) and Regina Anzenberger (Anzenberger Gallery), tto put the independent publishers right at the entrance, where visitors with fresh and curious eyes came in. In the evening we had some delicious food and nice music after to meeting each other. I really have to recommend b.frank books with their wonderful collection of photobooks from Switzerland, and Million Books , by Jens Masmann and Andreas Frei based in Munich. Richard Sporleder of Café Lehmitz has been a huge help giving me advice about getting GD into libraries Hermann Lohss is one of the nicest people I've met in the scene, so helpful with everything! And after everything was over and we were ready to go on sunday, we sat down with Ecki Heuser from 5uhr30.com and his lovely companion to talk about everything else but photobooks.

My task for the second day was meeting with bookshops, and after I made my round I am happy to tell you there are a lot of places now to get GLORY DAYS: Shops in Germany, Belgium, Great Britain you'll find here. Most of them have also an online shop. So I made my GLORY DAYS copy count and HALF OF THEM ARE OUT THERE!!!
           Vienna Photo Book Table 3
               Vienna Photo Book Table 4
It really was a wonderfull festival! So cosy and familiar, not to huge you get lost, or to small nobody comes by, well organised and sometimes with a bit of summer camp feeling (when the toilets don't work - for just 30min!). Next year I'll be definetly there again!

GLORY DAYS at josefchladek.com

GLORY DAYS got a new online presentation at the website of Josef Chladek.
Josef told me he doesn't collect photobooks because they are value or especially collectable, he is more a gatherer of books in his own interest. So you'll also find books from other areas like design or arcitecture. He writes: 'The underlying concept of this site is to showcase books, not just as simple books but rather as objects. When browsing the internet for relevant information I got so bored by just finding some small text snippets, occasionally bad pictures, and mostly information that related to the book but didn't give an impression of the actual size, the print quality and so on. So my aim was to present books in an adequate way, to show them just as you’d see them in real life. So I put them on a virtual book shelf from which you can choose them'.

Happy and honored to be on that online shelf, because I love the website since a year! You'll see books presented in a very personal way, but it is always just about the book. So check out the Website!

LOST THINGS - Von Zufälligen Begegnungen

25. November – 21. Dezember 2011

(QueenAnne Galerie)

The groupexhibition at Kulter  in Amsterdam intended to show a selection artists Felixmüller felt an Affinity to. Because of her theoretical analysis of Wunderkammern and collection of the early 15th century she decided to choose artist representing the four categories of those kind of collection: ars naturalia, artificalia, antiquitates und scientifica. The presentation and installation of the works in one room was on one hand organised in a simple way, like the associative mind would have chosen it, on the other confusing. But in it's way of 'not organised' it encouraged a lively debate between the visitors.

Jim Casper wrote:

"Beat poet Gary Snyder talks about the Buddhist “experience” that cannot be fully expressed with words. He says:
'It’s an inner order of experience that is not available to language. Language has no words to talk about it. When you put it into words you lose it; so it’s better not to talk about it. . . . The true poem is walking that edge between what can be said and that which cannot be said. . . . Haiku has something of this quality. The haiku of Basho and his immediate disciples have the quality of the poem pushed as far as one can push it. ‘The words stop but the meaning goes on.'
For me, the photography installations of Maria L. Felixmueller share similar aesthetics and goals."

is the first publication of Maria L. Felixmüller. The text is from 2006 and got published in 2011 by Werkstatt Wort and Prof. Christoph Türcke at Institut für Buchkunst, Leipzig as Number 27.

The text shows the huge simillarity between analogue and digital photography till the point of the latent image. Something completely different happens with the pictures then, and it doesn't  happen in the camery - more in our mind.

Produktive Unordnung - Vom Sammeln und Staunen

Produktive Unordnung

Produktive Unordnung

Productive Mess – A study of Collection and Wonder Staring from the Picture “Haufen” (“pile”), the artist developed the philosophical concept of the productive mess between the two poles of desire in every human being – the need for order and structure, and the lust for a little chaos. Humanity collects and wonders – the origin of many good things in the world.

anlegten.
staunt. Das Staunen ist selbst ein Schwebezustand. Es zeigt sich, dass es nicht bleiben
will, was es ist.

Exhibition at Oberwelt e.V. Stuttgart
Peter Haury writes:

F-Stop Catalogue

f/stop Fotofestival for photography in Leipzig

F/Stop Vol 4.

(KEHRER Verlag)

Souvenirs

The exhibition 'Souvenirs' followed a three month long Grand Tour. Felixmüller travelled through Europeand visited not only the main museums, like the Proda or Louvre, but also the small houses like the Maurits Huis in Den Haag to see the highlight paintings and art of the old world.

On the trip through the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, France, Italy and England she collected pictures and souvenirs, wrote over 300 postcards and filled several notebooks.

In her first installation she brought all of it together and gave the observer the oppotunity to explore by them selfes the multi-facetted journey.

EinsPlusZwei postcard
